SUMMARY:Democratizing and Decolonizing Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies: Expanding Access and Preventing Biopiracy
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, March 11\, 2027 from 9:00am-5:00pm (PT)\nDemocratizing and Decolonizing Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies: Expanding Access and Preventing Biopiracy\n  \nPsychedelics and psychedelic-assisted therapies\, although rooted in Indigenous practice\, have long garnered scientific interest from Western researchers. Despite the slowdown of scientific inquiry following the Controlled Substances Act of 1970 and subsequent psychedelics research ban\, recent popular and scientific interest from Western investors has surged due to a steady renaissance of studies since the Nixon era. \n  \nPsychedelics hold promise as novel interventions to a host of illnesses\, including (but not limited to) treatment-resistant depression\, PTSD\, OCD\, anxiety\, substance use disorders\, and chronic pain syndromes. Expanding access to psychedelic therapies which treat these “diseases of despair” has the potential to help many of the historically disenfranchised groups these conditions often afflict – but therapies are being implemented in the consumerist context of Western medicine\, which has historically failed these same communities. In this landscape\, access to psychedelic-assisted therapy is often limited to those who have resources to pay privately\, while at the same time\,\nprivate actors attempt to patent non-novel psychedelic compounds and profit from Indigenous knowledge and practice while removing it from its cultural containers. \n  \n\nThis conference will bring together experts from across the public health\, systems reform\, healthcare\, and legal systems to explore ways in which access to psychedelic-assisted therapies can be made more equitable as well as investigate legislative measures that can be taken to protect\nagainst psychedelic biopiracy.
