2L Philip Roxas Sullivan:

I worked in-house with the Athletics baseball team as part of the Corporate Counsel Externship Program (CCEP). I primarily focused on transactional work but also had many opportunities to assist counsel with litigation matters.

The work is important because it directly impacts the organization’s business and ability to deliver a quality product for fans. I grew up attending Athletics games, so the opportunity to apply my legal education to support the team’s success was incredibly fulfilling.

However, what truly made my externship special were the people I worked with every day. The mentors I gained and the colleagues I now consider friends made my time with the Athletics a one-of-a-kind experience that I will carry with me throughout my career.

CCEP has given me invaluable insight into the role of in-house attorneys and the chance to make an impact in an industry where hands-on experience for law students is rare.

My externship immersed me in various areas of law, which is no surprise given the scale of the organization’s operations. I gained essential foundational skills that every attorney should bring into their practice—effective communication, professional conduct, receptiveness to feedback, and balancing responsiveness with quality work product, to name a few.

No matter where my career takes me, I’m confident that I am a better version of myself today than when I first entered the CCEP.

I can’t say enough great things about UC Law SF. Our school provides a wide range of opportunities across numerous fields of law and areas of interest. I’ve made lifelong friends and have had the honor of learning from some of the best faculty in the nation, including Professors Geevargis and Darling, who coordinate the CCEP. Their dedication has made the CCEP one of the premier externship programs among law schools nationwide and a highlight of my law school experience.

The Evidence of Success series highlights UC Law SF students as they share how the college’s opportunities equip them with the experience, skills, and confidence to excel in the legal profession.
