A New Model for Urban Higher Education

Located in the heart of San Francisco, the Academic Village brings together housing, academics, and community in a collaborative environment designed to support students, faculty, and institutional partners while bringing new creative and economic energy to the area.

Part of Into the Future: The Campaign for UC Law San Francisco, the Academic Village is the physical foundation for the campaign’s priorities of student success, faculty excellence, and innovative initiatives. Through investment in academic spaces, student housing, and campus infrastructure, UC Law SF is creating an environment that strengthens connection, expands opportunity, and supports future generations of legal professionals.

Building the Academic Village

The Academic Village is transforming UC Law SF into a fully integrated urban campus where students live, learn, and build community in the heart of San Francisco. Anchored by the Cotchett Law Center, Mary Kay Kane Hall, the Academe at 198 McAllister, and the historic Tower at 100 McAllister (currently undergoing seismic renovations), the Academic Village, centralized along four city blocks across the Tenderloin, Civic Center and Mid-Market neighborhoods, strengthens connections between education, housing, and interdisciplinary partnership.

The first phase of this vision was realized in 2020 with the opening of the LEED Platinum Cotchett Law Center at 333 Golden Gate Avenue, followed in 2023 by the completion of the Academe at 198 McAllister, a 15-story residential and academic building featuring 656 affordable student housing beds, simulated courtrooms, classrooms, collaborative spaces, and student amenities.

Today, UC Law SF is advancing the next major phase of the Academic Village through the transformation of the iconic Tower at 100 McAllister. Expected to be completed in fall 2027, the renovated Tower will provide new student housing, academic and administrative space, and expanded community-centered amenities that support student life and campus connection.

The Tower at 100 McAllister

100 McAllister St.At the forefront of the Academic Village stands the Tower at 100 McAllister, UC Law SF’s most iconic and historically significant building. Opened in 1930 and acquired by the College in 1978, the Tower has been a defining part of campus life and student housing for generations of students.

Today, the historic 28-story building is undergoing a major renovation and seismic retrofit that will preserve its architectural significance while transforming it into a modern hub for student housing, collaboration, and campus life. Upon completion in fall 2027, the Tower will provide 80 residential units ranging from one- to six-bedroom apartments, along with new academic, administrative, and amenity spaces.

Supported primarily through a significant State of California investment, the project will strengthen the long-term future of the Academic Village and create spaces dedicated to student wellness, recreation, connection, and community.
