Bio
Madeline (Maddie) Thomas received her BA magna cum laude from UC Davis with majors in Philosophy and Political Science, and a minor in Human Rights Studies in 2019, and received her JD cum laude from UC Law San Francisco (then UC Hastings) in 2022. While at UC Law SF, she served as Co-Chair of the Moot Court Team, and competed on and coached several competition teams. As a competitor, she earned national awards for Best Oral Argument and Best Brief. Maddie also served as a staff editor on the Hastings Journal of Crime and Punishment and as research assistant for Professor Dorit Reiss, with whom she co-authored an article published in the San Diego Law Review. She also interned/externed with the United States Attorney’s Office (NDCA), the California Department of Justice, and the California Supreme Court.
After law school, Maddie returned to the California Department of Justice where she is now a Deputy Attorney General in the Appeals, Writs and Trials Section in the Criminal Division, working on a variety of criminal appellate matters. Maddie teaches second-year Appellate Advocacy in the fall semester and first-year Legal Research and Writing 2 in the spring semester. She also serves as an alumni coach for the UC Law SF Moot Court Team and last year coached the Appellate Lawyers Association team to a national championship win. Maddie lives in San Francisco, and is passionate about justice, ethics, and education.
