Keynote Biography
Activist, Author, and Former Journalist
Helen Zia is an award-winning journalist and author whose work explores immigration, civil rights, and the Asian American experience. She is the author of Last Boat Out of Shanghai: The Epic Story of the Chinese Who Fled Mao’s Revolution, published after twelve years of research and more than 100 survivor interviews, as well as Asian American Dreams: The Emergence of an American People, a finalist for the Kiriyama Pacific Rim Book Prize, and My Country Versus Me, the story of Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee. She served as Executive Editor of Ms. Magazine and is a Fulbright Scholar and graduate of Princeton University’s first coeducational class.

Founding Partner, Pointer & Buelna LLP – Lawyers For The People
Adanté Pointer is an award-winning, nationally recognized civil rights attorney who has represented families for over 20 years, securing many of the highest verdicts and settlements in the nation. He represented the family of Oscar Grant in their case against BART, later depicted in the film Fruitvale Station, and has been named to the Daily Journal’s Top 100 Attorneys. In June 2022, he won a record-setting $21 million verdict in a federal jury trial against the Fremont Police Department.
Professor, Asian American Studies, San Francisco State University
Dr. Russell Jeung is a sociologist whose research focuses on race, religion, and social movements within Asian American communities. He is the author of five books, including Family Sacrifices: The Worldviews and Ethics of Chinese Americans and Faithful Generations: Race and New Asian American Churches, and co-produced the documentary The Oak Park Story. In 2020, he launched Stop AAPI Hate, a coalition project that tracks COVID-19-related discrimination to inform community resources and policy interventions against racism.
Professor of Law, Stanford Law School
Shirin Sinnar is an expert in civil rights litigation, national security law, and the legal treatment of political violence, with particular focus on legal responses to hate crimes and terrorism. Her scholarship has appeared in the Harvard Law Review, Stanford Law Review, and other leading journals, and in 2017 she was the co-recipient of the inaugural Mike Lewis Prize for National Security Law Scholarship. Appointed by Governor Gavin Newsom, she served on the California Commission on the State of Hate, and in 2021 testified before the U.S. House Judiciary Subcommittee on anti-Asian hate violence.
