Bio
Aimee Carlisle is the C. Keith Wingate Visiting Assistant Professor of Law at the Center for Racial
and Economic Justice (CREJ) at UC Law SF. Her scholarship examines the intersections of
criminal law, constitutional law, and race.
Before joining UC Law SF, Professor Carlisle worked for a decade as a public defender. As a
deputy federal public defender in Los Angeles, she represented clients charged with crimes
ranging from immigration offenses to capital murder at the trial level. She previously was a
senior attorney at The Bronx Defenders and represented thousands of clients in state criminal
court proceedings while also working on special litigation issues. She co-wrote three amicus
briefs on constitutional issues that were filed before the U.S. Supreme Court, including in Bruen
and Rahimi. Her writings have appeared in SCOTUSBlog and The Washington Post.
Professor Carlisle graduated from New York University School of Law, where she was a RootTilden-Kern Public Interest Scholar and Derrick Bell Public Service Scholar. Professor Carlisle was
awarded the Law Alumni of Color Association Convocation Prize for Public Service. She also
served as a managing editor for the N.Y.U. Review of Law and Social Change.
