Alysha Shahrukh LLM ’25:

For Alternative Spring Break, I worked with the Alameda County Office of Education in their Policy Advocacy Department. I was the only law student appointed to this pro bono position.

Highlights of my experience include actively participating in policy discussions affecting local and county education initiatives, contributing to critical research and advocacy efforts, and engaging directly with policymakers and education advocates.

One notable aspect of my work involved researching and preparing a memorandum on a state bill that failed to offer adequate rehabilitation programs for juveniles expelled from the public school system. My research specifically highlighted successful rehabilitation initiatives employed by other counties in California and throughout the United States.

This experience was meaningful to me because it aligned closely with my interests in law, public policy, and community engagement. Working within an environment dedicated to systemic change strengthened my determination to advocate for equitable educational opportunities, particularly for underserved communities.

This pro bono project significantly advanced my career aspirations, allowing me to gain practical experience in the policy-making process. This included drafting, debating, and implementing legislation. It further enhanced my appreciation of the critical role lawyers play in shaping education policy.

Additionally, the experience reinforced the importance of collaboration when addressing complex social issues, inspiring me to continue seeking similar community-oriented opportunities during my law school journey.
