Bio

David Makman is an Affiliated Scholar with the Center for East Asian Legal Studies and an Adjunct Professor at UC Law SF, where he teaches Japanese Law and Legal Institutions. He specializes in cross-border disputes and has extensive experience with technology law and intellectual property law, including high stakes patent infringement litigations involving electronics, semiconductor manufacturing, software, and other technologies. He also handles commercial litigation and disputes relating to corporate governance, primarily for startups and member-managed LLCs.

Prior to founding The Law Offices of David A. Makman in 2009, Mr. Makman served as counsel with Howrey LLP and as associate at Morrison & Foerester, Fish & Neave, and Loeb and Loeb.  He also worked for several years for Matrix Kabushiki Kaisha in Tokyo marketing U.S. software products to Japanese companies and providing technical support for AI, CAD, CASE, and Parallel Processing products.

Mr. Makman reads and speaks Japanese and has served as Chairman of the Board of the Japan Society of Northern California.  He has published on intellectual property and corporate governance issues, including Changes in Corporate Governance are Having an Effect in Japan (Special to the National Law Journal); Recent Trends in Japanese IP and Antitrust Law (Patent Resources Group); and Cross-Border Patent Disputes (Hastings Business Law Journal).  He holds a J.D. and an LL.M. in International and comparative Law from Duke University Law School.
