Chancellor & Dean David Faigman

Dear UC Law SF Community,

Today, more and more students both at UC Law SF, and throughout colleges and universities across our state and country, are the first in their family to attend and graduate from college or a university. As a proud public institution, and the first law department of the University of California, our school has a deep and storied legacy of being home to trailblazers. Of the over 22,000 proud UC Law SF alumni, many are the first in their family to have attended college, and today, are practitioners, judges, business leaders, and public policy changemakers. Our school and alumni take great pride in setting new paths of opportunity.

We are not only proud to be the law school of such trailblazers, but we continue to work hard, and take pride, in serving the trailblazers of today and tomorrow, including current and future first generation students at UC Law SF. Therefore, it is my privilege to announce the launch of the UC Law SF First Generation Program.

Under the leadership of Provost & Academic Dean Ratner and Director Lopez, we are launching a comprehensive program that brings together all the resources of our institution and directly addresses, bolsters, and celebrates the first generation experience for academic and professional success.

The First Generation Program will be comprised of workshops, mentoring, alumni engagement, and networking events all focused on the first generation experience. I want to thank the First Generation Program Committee, which is comprised of faculty, students, staff, and administrators in helping create and develop our workshops and events. Our entire institution and alumni are behind our first generation students to ensure success, and a place of community.

UC Law SF First Generation students are reflected in every part of our campus communities: Moot Court, Journals, LEOP, Trial Team, Clinics, ASUCH, and in each and every one of our classrooms. You will also find first generation faculty, staff, and senior administrators. As Chancellor & Dean, my greatest joy is serving our students so that they can succeed today in the classroom, and in the future as lawyers and leaders. I take great pride in positioning UC Law SF to be the destination of choice for future first generation students and continue the legacy of being a place for learning, opportunity, and advancement for our students, our state and country, and our global community.

Best Regards,

David
