Beyond Disparities: Advancing Health Care Reparations

September 22, 2023 @ 11:00 am - 2:00 pm

Since 2020, significant attention has centered on the persistence of racialized disparities in health and healthcare. Building synergies across local and national efforts, this panel will explore arguments for the urgency of reparative frameworks to address root causes of health and healthcare inequities. To invigorate a conversation of ‘moving beyond’ disparities, speakers will contextualize research and advocacy, highlight existing work and potential partnerships and collaboration, gaps in the field and challenges, and identify opportunities for reform. This panel features:

  • Ruqaiijah Yearby, J.D., M.P.H is the inaugural Kara J. Trott Professor in Law at the Moritz College of Law at The Ohio State University. She is also Co-founder and a faculty affiliate of the Institute for Healing Justice & Equity and one of the Co-Founders of the Collaborative for Anti-Racism & Equity.
  • Linda Jones is a Birth and Postpartum Doula, photographer and mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who lives in Oakland, CA. She is a co-founder of Black Women Birthing Justice, and is a co-author of Battling Over Birth; Black Women and the Maternal Health Care Crisis in California.
  • Norlissa M. Cooper, PhD, MSN, BSN, RN earned her B.S. in nursing from the University of Rochester, her M.S. in nursing with a concentration in education from Georgetown, and her PhD in nursing with a concentration in health policy from UCSF. Dr. Cooper works as a Registered Nurse at San Francisco General.
