The China Puzzle: Rethinking US-China Relations for the Future

November 8, 2023 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Join us for an insightful event delving into the complex dynamics of the China-US relationship. Doug Bandow from the Cato Institute will navigate the multifaceted challenge that China presents to the United States, drawing a sharp contrast with the historical context of the Soviet Union. While the “China threat” is explored, emphasis will be placed on the economic rather than military aspect, highlighting the catastrophic consequences of war for both nations and the broader region. The presentation will shed light on Beijing’s internal struggles encompassing demographic, economic, social, and political issues, coupled with its limited global alliances. Attendees will leave with a balanced perspective, learning why knee-jerk reactions or passive policies won’t suffice, and why a long-term approach and engagement with future generations are pivotal. The event will culminate in an exploration of the potential impact of leadership transitions in China and the call for the US to address its vulnerabilities while strategically cooperating and contesting with China. Lunch will be provided, so don’t miss out!
