Bio

Joe is the Director of LRW and Moot Court at UC Law SF.  Following several years as an ERISA litigator representing labor unions, several more as General Counsel to a web design firm, and 117 weeks as an ERISA Trial Attorney with the U.S. Dept. of Labor, Joe started his own law practice in 2005 focusing on employee benefits (ERISA), insurance bad faith, and nationwide class action litigation, from pre-trial counseling to United States Supreme Court advocacy. Joe was one of the winners of the 2012 California Lawyers Attorney of the Year (“CLAY”) awards and recognized by both Best Lawyers in America, and California Super Lawyers, the latter of which is 2019 honored Joe as one of the top 100 attorneys in Northern California.

Joe graduated from UC Law SF in 1992.  In 1991, he and his teammate won the Western Regional Championship of the American Bar Association’s National Appellate Advocacy Competition.  Joe received an LL.M. in Taxation cum laude from Golden Gate University in 2003.  Joe has been teaching Legal Research & Writing and Moot Court at UC Law SF since 1994. In recent years, Joe has also acted as a judge for numerous Moot Court competitions, including the ABA’s National Appellate Advocacy Competition, and the National Moot Court Competition. In 2016 and 2017, he produced and hosted a weekly legal podcast called The Law Is My Ass, interviewing lawyers, scholars, and judges to present complex legal news in understandable terms.

Joe is also a musician, a woodworker, a terrific cook, a pretty poor basketball player, has a bionic heart, and is a huge fan (and part-owner) of the Green Bay Packers.  He and his wife share their house in the Haight-Ashbury District of San Francisco with an adorable dachshund named Choo Choo.
